Confused govt in denial mode

Though confusion prevails regarding the exact number of
casualty and patients suffering from meningococcemia
meningitis, the city government on Wednesday
categorically denied if the disease was assuming a
critical dimension and advised against rampant
immunisation. Health Minister Dr Yoganand Shastri said
there was nothing to show the disease has acquired
epidemic proportions.

Dr Shastri said the need of immunisation could only arise
if the number of infected goes as high as 4000. "I do not
see the number of cases reported so far is even a decimal
of the epidemic projection. The need of the hour is
precaution, which largely means cleanliness, clinical
treatment, and certainly not mass immunisation," Dr
Shastri said.

About the latest status of killer disease, Dr Shastri
said: "In all, 43 suspected cases have been reported
including three deaths from the suspected bacterial
meningitis. The figure of 43 also includes nine fresh
cases with clinical symptoms of meningococcemia
meningitis."

The figure doled out by Dr Shastri goes against what the
National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) which
"claims to have recorded 51 cases including 10 deaths."
Taking a U-turn, an NICD official said: "All these cases
have 90 per cent clinical symptoms of to turn out to be
the cases of bacterial meningitis."

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), on the other
hand, said there were nine deaths including one of Imran
Ali, 40, at Hindu Rao Hospital on Wednesday morning.
"These were confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis," Dr
JN Banwalikar, director, hospital administration, MCD,
said. "We have got 51 patients so far having clinical
symptoms of bacterial meningitis. It includes nine deaths
too," he added.

As the confusion mounts due to the obvious lack of co-
ordination among the three agencies over the number of
cases and casualties, the "distress buying" of
vaccination is catching momentum with each passing day.

"We have sold over 15000 doses of quadrivalent of all the
four strains-A, C, Y and W131. And the cost of each
varies from Rs 650 to Rs 900," Vishal of Tosha Agencies
said on Wednesday. "Earlier, it was only the children who
were vaccinated religiously but for last two days with
this recent outbreak every family is getting vaccinated."

"The bacteria called neisseria meningitis commonly
affects the children under the age of 5 years and we
treat around 25-30 such cases on an average every year in
our hospital," Dr AK Dutta director and Head, Department
of Paediatrics at Kalavati Sharan Hospital said.

"Rarely, it affects the adults which unfortunately has
happened this time mostly the young adults as they prone
to mix and mingle in larger crowds. And by the nature of
this infection, it gets transmitted to anyone in close
contact with those affected."

As per the medical records, it has been noticed that
adults gets affected ina cyclical period of 12-15 years
as similar cases were reported in the Capital in 1985.
"In 1985, there were more than 6000 cases with 880 deaths
reported in Delhi. We did not need vaccination even
then," said Dr Dutta. He also heads the team comprising
two other experts to lift up samples to confirm such
cases.

"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the

"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
