sealants
|
|
|
My six year old just had sealants put on his molars. He has broken out into
a rash on the outside of the cheeks. My dentist doesn't think it relates
because it is on the outside rather than in his mouth. HOwever, he does
break out on his cheeks when he eats something he is allergic to. Have you
ever seen or heard of an allergic reaction to sealants before?

Never heard of it before. This would be the first time. Have the allergist
verify it.

I would expect redness around the lips if it was allergy to the glove latex.

Sure. But I once saw a reaction in a pt. who had lupus to a rubber
dam. There was blistering and ulceration of the skin against which the
dam contacted, but swelling and blistering of the ipsilateral eye as
well. There could be a more generalized allergic reaction such as
angioedema, or even a contact allergy.
Or, I could be wrong. ;-0

Sure, but there was more reaction where the skin was in constant contact
with the latex.

Did your child ever before get some composite restaurations?
Due to the high amount of free resin in sealnts this would be possible.
Latex allergy is possible.
Was there a fluoride sealer put on top? (often done because of etching
the teeth for the treatment) There are F(-)-sealers that contain
eugenol, which is also common to cause allergic reactions.
I personally never had a case. But I had a patient needing
antihistaminics for months because of two metalls interfering with each
other. The restaurations where then replaced.
The allergic reaction doesn't have to take place inside the mouth,
although is the more common form. But there is also a swollen lip or
eyes a possible reaction.

IF it was an allergy, the tissues would be most effected where there was the
most contact!!!!

There are systemic reactions, too. Since this seems to be a type 4
allergy that came later and not immediately.

Easily tested for by a physician, but I doubt it will prove to be the case.
