The hypothesis is:

Lifestyle -- poor eating habits, junk food, lack of exercise -- may
contribute to some small degree to the fattening of America but the
more significant factor is that persons who are genetically prone to
obesity and the diseases that come with it are being kept alive by
modern medicine. If we rolled back the clock medicine-wise to (say)
the 1920's we would return to the same or similar weight ratios we had
then.
