How many Calories can the human body pull from food in a day?
|
|
|
Does anyone know what limit the body has on the amount of calories it
can pull from food over the course of a day? Take, for instance, a
relatively healthy individual eating about 2000 Calories a day of a
FDA-style food pyramid diet, and getting 30-60 minutes of vigorous
exercise per day. If this person suddenly decides to ingest 20,000
Calories on one day (maybe in the form of blocks of lard?), what are
they really getting out of it, Calorie-wise? Or are there so many
variables that it's too tricky to answer?
IS there some maximum amount of Calories that the human body can (or
will) extract from foods?
The inspiration for this question:
My thoughts: In any diet, good or bad, one of the things that seems
most influential is consistency. A person who eats healthfully can go
totally nutso on eating periodically with no noticable effects. (And
by the same token, a person with an unhealthy diet can also
periodically eat very healthfully, with no noticable effects either.)
Thanks in advance for any info folks can provide!

There is a maximum ammount of food that can be digested and since the
transport and metabolization systems (like glycolysis, beta oxidase,..) in
the body also have a limit: yes, there is a maximum ammount of calories than
can be utilized from food.

Do you have any idea what this number might be? Even if only totally
roughly?
Thanks,
Rick

I would imagine that humans can easily absorb 10,000 cals per day, because
they can burn that much in a day. I would be surprised if the maximum is
under 20,000 cals per day.

I've read where lumber jacks would eat up to 8000 calories a day.
They work pretty hard. |

Maybe this is elementary, but if a person is burning roughly 2,000
calories per day, then they suddenly eat 10,000, do you think the body
would save that 8,000 calories? If so, would it be as fat? How much
fat would be required to hold about 8,000 calories?
Thanks,
Rick

There is around 9 cal/gram of fat. So 8,000 calories would be about 1000
grams of fat, or about 2 pounds.
A Double Quarter Pounder(R) with Cheese (730 cal) , large french fries (520
cal) and large Coca-Cola(R) (310 cal), with a pair of Baked Apple Pies (250
cals each) -- a snack for many high-school students, and you are eating
around 2000 cal. If you ate this for lunch, snack and dinner, had a late
night snack of ice cream and hearty breakfast and a mid-morning snack, you
could easily go past the 10,000 cal.
