I'm Barb, an almost twenty two year survivor of stage II breast cancer. I
read here regularly and post once in a while. I am having a stereotactic
breast biopsy later this afternoon, after a routine mammogram found punctate
calcifications. These had been noted for a couple of years, but were more
"apparent" this time around. The BIRAD is 3, and I was told these are
probably benign. Does having a history of bc make these more suspicious?
The biopsy was my idea---didn't think I'd do well with a six month wait
until another mammogram would be done. (Hadn't been asked to have a six
month repeat on the mammogram last year or the year before). Thanks for any
information.

Breast cancer isn't one of my sites Barb...........
Is the mammogram on the same sde as the previous cancer?
The radiologists are very good at mammo interpretation these days, and as
I'm sure you know, the majority of small lesions are benign. But I'm sure
it's prudent to get the biopsy |

Thanks for answering, Steph. No, the mammogram was of the opposite breast.
The cancerous breast was removed--modified radical mastectomy. Had the
procedure this afternoon and was told that all calcifications were removed
and pathology would follow in a few days. Now the nervous wait for results.
I think there's more liklihood that the calcifications are benign than
malignant, but there's still some stress. I appreciate that you'd reply,
Steph.

I had calcifications in one breast way before the cancer was found in the
other. Eight years before - when Mr Pratt told me he knew ladies. They
didn't remove them even for biopsy, there was a note in my folder, " ...
interestingly there are calcifications in the left breast ... " As far as I
know they're still there.
Worrying won't help, Barb, but you know that!

Hi Mary,
Fancy meeting you here! Yes, the intellectual part of me knows that
worry is entirely fruitless---I'm just not entirely rational in relation to
bc. (Despite twenty one and a half years of trying to practice some sanity).
It IS encouraging to know that you have had benign calcifications---despite
a bc history. Bless you for writing. I'm still waiting for a call
regarding pathology. Thanks again, Mary.

You've got it by now - I'm very happy for you.
The other evening we visited my husband's dead brother's first wife and her
second husband, we don't see them often but enjoy their company. Robert has
been diagnosed with untreatable mesothelioma (sp?) so I was trying to find
something about it.
It was nice to see a familiar face here for me too, somehow makes itmore
friendly.
But there's someone missing ...
:-)
