Twenty-two Kaiser Permanente hospitals received an award from the state
Tuesday for virtually eliminating their use of mercury.

Oakland-based Kaiser also was recognized for its commitment to building
mercury-free hospitals in California.

The awards were presented by the California Department of Toxic
Substances Control through its Mercury Elimination Leadership Program.

Through the voluntary program, Kaiser has reduced the level of mercury
usage at its California medical facilities by 87 percent on average.
Some Kaiser hospitals have achieved a 99 elimination of mercury
products, according to the department.

Mercury is a reproductive toxin and a potent neurotoxin. When hospitals
throw away mercury-containing devices such as fever thermometers and
blood pressure measuring devices the chemical can re-enter the
environment.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, medical waste
incinerators are the fourth-largest source of mercury re-entering the
environment. In addition, the EPA estimates that mercury fever
thermometers contribute about 17 tons of mercury disposed of in solid
waste landfills annually.

Being from San Francisco, I *know* The Kaiser Hospitals . . .

Big Fing deal. The probably got rid of their old, dated blood pressure
devices, and their mercury thermometers. Believe me, it wasn't a
helluva lot more.

I would not take my Pet to a Kaiser Hospital to be euthanized. They
would screw it up.
