Freeze! Submit to surgery or we'll shoot!
Sounds absurd, doesn't it? But a 34-year-old mother in Seattle has
been arrested, jailed and charged with "kidnapping" her own infant son
after she tried to rescue him from overzealous surgeons who demanded
to perform kidney surgery on the boy.
"You do what I tell you to do, or I will have the police at the door,
taking that baby from you." That's what one doctor reportedly told the
woman, shortly before Child Protective Services took her baby away.

"This mother's rights have been annihilated, ----"
The baby has no rights? It obviously has serious renal failure if growth
is stunted and dialysis is being considered, -- no trivial matter in a baby
of this size. What naturopath even claims to have an effective solution
for that?
Sometimes patient (or parent) "choice" can be understood, at other times it
borders on lunacy or raises suspicions about the true underlying motives..
Who knows what the mother is truly thinking? Presumably the baby is being
set up for major surgery or a renal transplant that will resolve the renal
failure. Perhaps, if the mother is entranced by "alternative" philosophies
to do with "bodily purity and naturalness and all will be well", she just
cannot stand the idea of having a sickly child, and is feeling guilty and
resentful about that. Perhaps she cannot face all the inconveniences the
expected medical care, especially when it goes against her own naive
medical beliefs.
I hate having to say it, but I am sure that for a variety of such mixed up
emotions some parents do not regard a child's death as worst possible
outcome in such cases. They can always absolve themselves of any personal
responsibility for the death by claiming it was God's will.
It is a tragic situation either way and it is disingenuous to the extreme to
portray the doctors wanting to save the baby's life as having anything but
the best motives. They are simply doing what most parents would want them
to do.

Ailing Seattle baby found safe; mom charged with kidnapping
01:11 PM PDT on Saturday, June 24, 2006
By kgw.com and KING Staff
SEATTLE -- A seriously ill 9-month-old boy taken from Seattle's Harborview
Medical Center was recovered early this morning, and his mother was arrested
on a kidnapping warrant. Children's Hospital confirmed that little Riley
Rogers is resting comfortably in satisfactory condition after being admitted
around 3 a.m.
The boy had been scheduled for surgery Thursday at Harborview to treat what
relatives described as a kidney ailment. Police said his mother, Tina
Carlsen, hid him in a diaper bag and took him from Harborview Thursday
morning.
A statewide amber alert was canceled after detectives recovered the boy when
they pulled over a vehicle around 12:20 this morning in Yelm, southeast of
Olympia.
The boy's mother has been ordered held on $500,000 bail.
No word yet about whether his surgery has been rescheduled. Children's
Hospital referred all other inquiries to state Child Protective Services.
A man and a woman who were with Carlsen when she was arrested remain in
custody, said Deanna Nollette, a spokeswoman for the Seattle Police. So far,
they have not been charged with any crime.
She said detectives had been staking out an area in Yelm when they spotted
Carlsen, the baby and two other adults in a car around 12:20 a.m. Saturday
near State Route 507 in Yelm.
Carlsen's brother, Randy Carlsen, said his sister had lately come to believe
that natural remedies should be attempted.
Police said medical staff have said, however, that if the child does not
receive treatment, he would die.
Seattle Police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said Tina Carlsen does not have legal
custody of the child, who is under the control of the Washington state
department of Child Protective Services. |

It's hard to hear of situations like this occuring. I don't think that
the full story was disclosed here. I think we still need to hear more
about the situation. Do I think it was right that the doctor say those
things to the mother, no of course not. But there could be some medical
reasons as to why they needed to give the baby the medication or why
the mother was not allowed to give her baby breast milk. I work in
children's healthcare and I know of several instances where the
hospitals have to take these drastic actions in order to provide the
care the baby needs. I'd be interested in hearing about the mother's
state of mind. Don't get me wrong, I think how this situation was
handle, was unprofessional and disrespectful, but in the end, it might
not have been the worse thing to happen. |

I agree. Assuming he did say those things. I imagine that the doctor didn't
tell the press what he said so the reported comments are from one of the
other parties involved.
I wondered about the last bit of the article...

...was that the situation BEFORE the reported incident or one result of it?
The article isn't clear. |

There have been no direct quotes from any doctors... just generalized press
releases from the hospital (Children's Hospital, not Harborview... two
different facilities, though they are both teaching hospitals). This is due
to privacy laws... and the family do not seem to want to let the doctors'
opinions known (nor even the names of the doctors).

The court removed the mother's custody on June 9th, so no, the parents did
not have custody of the child. There is some controversy over the wording
of the "Amber Alert", which is why her arrest was so dramatic.
There is more information at the website of the local radio station. Here
is the interview with the mother:
