Advice wanted please.

Current Prescription
R : SPH -5.50 , CYL -1.00 , Axis 20, Prism 1.5 Base Out
L : SPH 6.00, CYL -1.00, Axis 5 , Prism 1.5 Base Out.
On April 6th a pair of Hoya Rimless Glasses were ordered from
Specsavers, opticians based in Bracknell, Berkshire. Although the
prescription was near identical, my previous glasses (1.5 Index) were
bulky and large, so under advisement of the opticians purchased a pair
of smaller glasses with Hoya Thin and Light lenses (1.60 Index). The
saleswoman stated it would take two-three weeks to manufacture the
glasses, as it needed to be dispatched to Hoya, UK.
On April 28th the salesperson telephoned to say the glasses were ready
for collection, so with trepidation and excitement went to the store to
pickup the finished spectacles. Within moments of examining the
glasses, immediately realised the lenses were much thicker, than my
previous glasses, so explained to the sales person the problem. Instead
of listening to my concerns, he pointed out that they were made-up to
the prescription written down, and were correct. So after much
deliberation, took the glasses.
As I was still suspicious that the glasses were wrong, went to an
independent opthalmist for a second opinion. After careful analysis he
believed the glasses were poorly finished, and should contact my
opticians. With this information I then went to a third optician D &
A, who took a photographic image of my contour and shape of face with
the glasses. In their opinion they believed the lenses should be
roughly 4.0mm to 4.5mm with 1.6 index lenses. So on the same day, with
a record of my previous ten years of prescriptions, returned the
glasses back to Specsavers.
On Tuesday May 2nd, Liz the Sales Manager telephoned to state that the
prescription was incorrectly written down, as both prisms should be
Base 1.5 Out, not Base 3.0 Out as recorded. So visiting the store
again, I politely asked Liz to gain a quote for the Hoya 1.71 index
Aspheric Lens, and correct the errors. After repeated chasing, a
message from a different salesperson quoted ninety pounds for the new
lenses. Immediate consent was given for the opticians to proceed.
Friday May 19th, the opticians telephoned to confirm the glasses were
ready. Unfortunately after examining the glasses pointed out to the
Manageress that both lenses were as thick as my previous lenses, even
though the new glasses were smaller in diameter, width and rounder in
design. She explained that it was Hoya's policy to make the lens
thicker than usual due to the rimless design, so reluctantly I took the
glasses home. It was only after careful analysis I noticed that the
left lens (4.5mm edge thickness) was manufactured differently in shape
and size to the right lens (5.5mm edge thickness). Also I noticed that
on the records it stated that 1.6 Index lens were used, but the
manageress replied that this was incorrect and 1.74 Pentax?? lens were
utilised.
So Saturday May 20th returned the glasses back to Specsavers, and after
a long discussion, pointed out the right lens was thicker than the
left, even though the prescription is lower. With reluctance the
Opticians agreed to amend the glasses. Also after telephoning
downstairs, confirmed 1.71 Hoya were used not 1.74 Pentax lenses, as
previously stated.
Yesterday, June 9th I returned back to the opticians to investigate
whether the glasses were ready. After speaking to another sales
person, she stated the glasses were dispatched to IGS (not Hoya?) on
the 31st May 2006, eleven days after they were handed back. Futhermore
the glasses would take another two weeks to complete. Only after
another telephone call was the provisional date of receiving the
glasses amended to 17th June 2006.
Now the problem is that I've lost faith in the opticians, as they
continually fail to deliver on-time the glasses as promised. Also there
is confusion over the lens utilised - index, manufacturer, lens
coating, etc and where the glasses are being manufactured. Without
taking the matter to the Optical Consumer Compaints Service, is there a
way of verifying the manufacturer, index, coating, edge diameter of the
lens once the glasses are returned.
Please could you give me advice on how to proceed.
Thank You

Total crap, I am sorry to say. Hoya 1.71 lenses are super thin and
don't need to be made any thicker for the rimless fit (I assume you
have chosen a pinfeel frame).
1.71 index should be nearly half the thickness of the 1.5 index lens.
It sounds like they were not made by Hoya as they are pretty good to
deal with and very careful about finished product quality.

Simple: ask for a full refund and take your business somewhere else.
There's no easy way of independently verifying the index of the lenses
(there is a way but it's not simple & easy).

Thank you for your replies so far.
The specticles are Pinfeel PF2024 Rimless design glasses,
www.hoya.co.kr/pro/frame/pin/pf2024.htm . Hoya were originally
contacted by myself to confirm that a specific edge thickness was
required for their pin design, but this presumably is a minimum
requirement for the process, as the lenses should be sufficiently thick
enough with my prescription. Also Hoya's Marketing Manager couldn't
identify on their database which order was partaining to the 1.71 lens
presumably ordered by Specsavers, Bracknell but I accept these comments
are relatively inconclusive.

It felt the Manageress and Sales people were trying to dupe me, as the
finish to both lenses were similar in thickness to my prior glasses and
the lenses lacked a coloured tint usually associated with an
Anti-Scratch and Anti-Reflective coating. Furthermore the nose bridge
on one side was slightly bent inwards.

In truth I was giving the Opthalmists a reasonable chance to correct
the faults. With the difficulty of finding another opticians that stock
a similar product, it would take more time to manufacture the glasses.
Also I'm unsure on the exact procedures relating to refunds on
Spectacles. |
