I'm just a lazy bastard with a good idea. No, I don't really care who
takes credit for it (some congress person would, and have their name
pinned to the act regardless). I'm just seeding the thought with
everyone that I encounter with the hopes that it falls into the right
ears. So go ahead. Write your congressperson or senator.

Hmmm, maybe nurses aren't just stupid about politics. Maybe they're
lazy too. ;)

You're right, and I understand the point.

j/k, but your 'stupid' comment wasn't nice (or accurate) .

LOL... it was meant to get the blood boiling :)

Well, it worked! Wink Why do you think the ANA or some local
chapters haven't come up with this idea? How about those California
nuses who are so progressive? Smile

It is going to take lots more than tax exempt status to get more RNs
doing bedside/clinical setting nursing.
Pay has gone up quite a bit in most areas, especially for those of us
who remember pay in the $18K to 24K range. Money is not every thing,
especially when one would still have to put up with the same BS and
conditions.

I started at $19K; so yes, I've been there. But my point was, that
money attracts all sorts of people; if people are willing to risk
their lives to drive a truck in a free fire zone; then nursing doesn't
seem that bad by comparison. Further, pay on both coasts, has
traditionally be much better than the middle states. Such an exemption
would be a tremendous help to RN's who still only make around $30K a
year.

Actually should correct my previous statement, NYPD and NYFD are
allowed
to ride free on MTA buses and trains if they are on duty. So again,
with
everyone and their mother wearing scrubs, how are you going to
distinguish between RNs on duty versus those not, and or all the rest
who wear white uniforms/scrubs. License numbers are not an easy
solution as there are many RNs in NYS alone who hold valid NYS
licenses
and do not work in nursing.

I think they give special metro cards to cops and firemen. They could
do the same for RNs. That's what I meant by licensure checks, along
with the tax return thing.

Again, it's all public perception and politics. It really doesn't
matter that NYPD or FDNY desk bound brass get to ride free too. The
bulk of the recipients would be the rank and file. But I do understand
the difficulty in separating the wheat from the chaff. Years ago, I
remember the running joke at a nursing review course which involved
failiing the boards; one could always go on to the Wilfred Beauty
Academy (a bueauticians' school) across the street without having to
buy new uniforms.

LOL...

Funny, but our uniforms looked nothing like Wilfred's, especially since
we wore caps. Today however the same uniform is standard for many NA's
as well as still being used by some schools, which must make for some
confusing situations on the floors.

Maybe they already have and discredited it, or perhaps it never saw
the light of day past some committee; whatever. My personal view is,
that the time is ripe for something like this, with the baby boomers
retiring, a nursing shortage would be a political football. Anything
that would have the appearance of helping to solve the problem would
be a winner.
