Hi all,

I've recently started swimming about three times per week. I'm 39, in
good health and reasonably fit (I cycle to work regularly). Last time I
swum regularly was 13 years ago, since then it's only been the
occasional couple of holiday weeks in the summer. When I joined my
company a couple of years ago they did a complete medical check-up
including an electrocardiogram and everything was fine.

I swim in a 34-yard long pool and I've been to it five times in the
last couple of weeks. I've done 28, 32, 40, 48 and 50 lengths,
alternating groups of four freestyle and four breast stroke, resting
when I feel like it, which is maybe every 6 or 7 lengths on average,
and between just a few seconds and half a minute, depending on how I
feel.

I admit that I tend to push myself hard, like I'm totally exhausted
after some fast lengths but it's just a few yards to the end of a
length and I just keep going. I know I shouldn't do this and I'm
determined not to do it again in the future, especially after what
happened yesterday.

I did my 50 lenghts and felt perfectly ok for about half an hour
afterwards. Then I'm standing on the underground going home and all of
a sudden I get this shortness of breath, no other symptom, no chest
pain or feeling of pressure, no dizziness, I'm just short of breath.
After a few minutes it started getting gradually better and after maybe
half an hour or 45 minutes I was completely recovered, though a bit
scared. Today I feel perfectly ok.

I know that in doubt I should go see my doctor and I probably will
anyway, but I thought I'd ask you guys first just in case this is a
known thing, as in "it's a normal reaction to some overexertion" or "if
you do that again you're going to have a heart attack" or "you just had
one!".

Many thanks in advance,

Carlos

No.

It would be wise for you to inform your doctor about your new symptoms.

Could be a heart attack or it could be many other things - some of which need
medical attention. So the best thing is to see a Dr. (could it hurt that
much?) and sooner rather than later.

I have a suspicion but I don't think anyone could make a reliable diagnosis
over the internet based on what you described. One thing you should do if you
think you are having a heart attack is to chew an aspirin - in addition to
calling an ambulance. If you are worried, you might want to think about having
a few in a small bottle.

What is your goal in swimming? If it is general training, you should know your
target heart rate. Gyms often have posters all over the place with this. So
you should measure your heart rate - either take your pulse or use a HR
monitor - to be sure you don't get out of your zone. However, if you swim in
cooler water this will lower your HR. You have to ask someone else the rules
about that.

Bill - not a Dr.

Thanks for your reply, Bill. I spoke to my doctor over the phone this
afternoon and she said it's nothing to worry about. She told me I
should not strain myself so much when I swim, recommended that I
measure my heart rate and never go above about 150, and also told me
that I should swim at a speed where I can breath comfortably and if I
have to stop and rest is because of muscular fatigue, not shorthess of
breath. As for what happened to me, she said it could have been a
combination of the overexertion and simply not having enough oxygen on
the underground, but if it happens again I should go and see her.

Many thanks again,

Carlos
