Lp(a)
|
|
|
Hi,
I'm a slender, athletic 49 year old woman with an HDl of 65, and LDL of 137
and (hold onto your hats, folks) an Lp(a) of 157. My doctor put me on
Niaspan, which burned an ulcer into my stomach at a one gram dose and
didn't lower anything. With the exception of some macular retinal trouble,
I have enjoyed excellent health and low blood pressure. This
Lp(a) number is not an error, my doctor had the test repeated with the same
result, then again on three separate occassions. My children are in the
same boat, my 13 year old son's Lp(a) is 143, my 15 year old daughter's is
127. We are all active and diet-conscious. Does anyone have any insight as
to why I'm still alive? I'm most worried about my son, his LDL is 118 and
his HDL is only 35. Any help?
Thanks!

Go see your family Doc aka PCP and take it as it comes. By this I
suggest counsel with trusted family and health providers.
³Does anyone have any insight as to why I'm still alive?² Scares me as
you are young and vibrant. Small and large glitches occur on our life
paths. I hope yours falls into place as I hope mine does too.
Best
Bill

You can find out a lot about cholesterol on this website:
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/cholesterol/index.htm
Specifics on Lp(a) can be found here:

We each have to play the cards we're dealt. In my case, it's a family
history (my Dad died of a heart attack at age 47). But, the fact that
you're slender and athletic and have low blood pressure means you're doing
the right things for your health. Best of luck.

Lp(a) is one of potentially many risk factors.

Worrying does not solve anything. Would suggest that you work with your
son's doctors to lower as many risk factors as possible.
You are welcome :-)
