question about lipitor and chest pain

Hi:
I am a 44 year old man. I recently had medicated stents placed and was
put on plavix, toprol and lipitor (40Mg). Since about 1 week after the
first stent was place (I had two surgeries) I started to has short
bouts of tightness and almost a burning sensation in my chest. I could
breath deep but it felt labored. These came and went. I would also have
anxiety at times.
After the second stent placement I have had bouts of chest pain (upper
chest both sides) which isn't like the chest pain I had before the
stents and I still have times of shortness of breath.
The upper chest pain leaves me sore and can feel like it's burning. I
think its the lipitor. My doc has asked me to stop the lipitor for a
few days.
Has anyone else experieburning tightness and shortness of breath from
lipitor. Is it possible for the stents to clog in 3 - 4 weeks?

Ask your Doc about the possibility of a Gastro Intestinal problem, e.g. |
esophagus spasm, reflux, these can give you burning and pain.

It's not that kind of pain. It's like a pulling feeling that builds up
and then becomes painful. It feels like I pulled a muscle (if my whole
upper chest was one muscle) and it hurt and burned afterwards. It is a
low level pain which then get worse and better in cycles all day long.

I had problems with several statins due to the GI effects. It just turned my
entire GI from esophagus down to colon inside out. Pain all the way down. |

Thanks. I understand. I have stoppped the lipitor for a few days to
see if it gets better.
I am still concerned that it's not just that, but if today I don't have
the pain return then I think I'll be better assured.

I may be way off base but here is a thought. After I had a stent placed
earlier this year I suffered from shortness of breath and chest tightness
also. (Which were the same symptoms I had before the stent.) I was later
diagnosed with General Anxiety and was prescribed Xanix. A few hours after
taking, all the symptoms went away. I still have occasional bouts of
breathlessness but I am convinced it is nothing but stress and anxiety since
the medication relieves the condition.

I suggest that you see your doctor about this issue ASAP. The doctor will
run some tests to determine the source of the problem.

I saw my doctor(s) today. I think you are both in the ball park. The
doctor thinks that the riping tightness and muscle pain is possibly the
lipitor. I am really sensative to drugs. anyway.. the doctor also
thinks that the negative reaction to lipitor started the anxiety spin
up so I am on xanix for a few days. so far (after 1 hour) the
breathing is a little better. I figure a few hours and I'll be fine
(hope).
I stopped the lipitor yesterday evening and although my chest is a
little sore in two spots the riping and tearing feeling, as well as the
pain, seem to mostly gone (before I took the xanax).
I know that I have every reason to get a bit anxious after this event
so I am not surprised by it. I wish I really didn't have to find all
this out the hard way. Anyway I still question the dosage sizes on the
lipitor since my cholesterol is down from 250 to 91 and LDL is down
from 150 to 46. I just don't think it's all the drug's doing. I think
my exercising and diet changes have a huge impact.
If I go back on statins I am going back in slow doses and having the
results checked before I increase it. No need to go to 40mg out of the
box.
BTW my dizzyness and blurred vision has subsided also (pre xanix post
lipitor stop).

I hear what you are saying Robert. But what if you were coming off a
visit to CABG and not knowing what the effect on ones health was aside
from being traumatized by open heart surgery. Would it not be difficult
to conclude one needed a different statin now that ones health baseline
had shifted ? Surgery effects me as a write this . Not so much physical
but some how.
I wonder if your statin use is in regards to lab results and I also
wonder if lots of folks come into contact via cardiologists after
surgery like me. The the above entry points are 180 degrees different.
Somehow I believe you have control and I must wait to see what happens.
May matter in regards to trying for best practice.

Stew,
You have a great doctor. Some doctors don't know hardly anything about the
side effects of statins. One of the safest statins is Pravachal (10 mg).
The most dangerous statin is Crestor (20 mg or 40 mg). Regardless of the
statin, the lowest dose is the safest dose. I suggest that you read this
book:
WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT STATIN DRUGS AND THEIR NATURAL ALTERNATIVES by
Jay S. Cohen, MD. Lots of people in this newsgroup have had side effects
from statins and this book really helped me understand statins. I only
wish that I had read the book before I took statins. It took several
months before I realized that the muscle pains were caused by statins. If
you have any other questions or concerns, post those questions and
concerns in this newsgroup. I am not a medical expert or doctor but there
are some wonderful medical experts and doctors in this newsgroup that can
help you. Hang in there.

Thanks for the info. I am lucky to be really sensative to drugs. It
only took 1 week for me to start to feel the side effects. I really
pay attention to my body. That's how I saw the warning signs of the my
artery blockages before I had a heart attack. Now I just hope all the
issues clear up in the next few days so I can be sure.

Well the problem I have is stomach hyperacidity along with hiatus. |
I have to take Zantac nightly and when I get some chest pain I take another
Zantac. The shortness of breathe I have gotten my doctor attributed to
hyperventilation.
Keep in mind I have not had any heart surgery or any confirmed CAD.
Some meds have given me heart burn to the point that I had trouble talking
like a ball stuck in my throat and with rolling pain suggestive of
esophagus.
William is right in that recent surgery is hard to get a baseline when
everything is new so it is hard to determine what is going on.
The only way in my case was the stopping of the drug and starting again with
the same symptoms developing. I then switched. |
