Question for doctor or Medical Expert
|
|
|
I was reading a medical book yesterday and the doctor mentioned the use of
special patches. She said that the patches allow medicines to be "absorbed
directly into circulation, thus bypassing the liver. This reduces the
work load upon the liver..."
My question: Do they make patches that contain blood pressure medications
or cholesterol medications?
If not, would such patches cause people to have less (or no) liver related
problems in relation to the use blood pressure medications and cholesterol
medications?
Thanks in advance,
Jason

The former but not the latter.

Because the liver is the source of synthesized cholesterol, there are
practical considerations for drug delivery systems that bypass the
portal circulation.

The mode of action is upon the liver and the liver metabolizes all the
drugs. How does entry from the peripheral circulation vs portal circulation
make any difference?

Robert,
I am not a doctor or medical expert. I merely copied two or three
sentences out of a book that was written by Doctor Sandra Cabot. Upon
request, I'll tell you the title of the book and the URL of Dr. Cabot's
website. You could email her via the website to ask your questions. Here's
the exact quotation:
"...[Patient] Joanne did not want to quit HRT altogether so we switched
her to the new combination hormone patches that contain both estrogen and
progesterone. In Joanne's case it was safer and natural to give forms of
HRT that are absorbed directly into the circulation, thus bypassing the
liver. This reduces the work load upon the liver and have less tendency to
cause weight gain than the tablet (oral) forms of HRT."
I am sorry that I can't provide a better answer to your question. If
anyone else can provide a better answer to Robert's interesting question,
feel free to do so.
Jason
