Does anyone know where I can find out how long one can expect to
survive after a heart attack, assuming one recovers? What are the odds
that someone who had a heart attack 40 years ago is alive today?
Suppose you add that the victim was 28 at the time.

Just curious

My husband had a heart attack in January 1989 when he was 52. he had a 4

way bypass soon after and now in 2005 he has had a second bypass
operation plus installation of a pace maker and he is fine!!

So he has survived 16 years so far and I hope he will go on for many
years yet!

Sounds like you have a very strong husband there. First time Cabg is
easy as it an unknown. Going back for another is chutzpa. A great
example of human spirit. Hope you both live long and prosper ...star
trek ...ideal.

It really depends a lot on individual circumstances. In some cases, a person'
s chance of survival may be BETTER after the Heart Attack because that person
now starts taking care of him or her self, taking medications, and getting
regular checkups, etc. On the other hand it could be worse if the person does
none of the above and suffered significant damage during the HA. It also
depends on gender, age, what kind of treatment the person had, etc.

Your example brings up another good point, the statistics of how a person who
had a HA 40 years ago would have faired may well exist somewhere but would not
be relevant to today. 40 years ago, 1965, the treatments were very very
different from today. And medications have evolved over time. So that would
tell us little about the next 40 years for a patient suffering a HA today.

And, obviously, the study of 40 year survival on patients receiving today's
treatments has not been done.

Prognostication is dependent on several factors filtered through the
experience of the clinician.
