I posted the following to sci.med a short
time back and got no reply...
Hello
A couple of questions.
I had a case of bronchitis and was given a script
for Zithromax, 5 days.I have had a mild sore throat with
fairly bad ear pain ever since.
A side effect of the anti-biotic? Or something
worst? I cannot see a Dr. for sometime,so any advice
or help would be most welcome.I am somewhat worried.
Please respond to the group.
I am a 47 year old male
Heavy smoker
My chest Xrays came back fine.
My concern is of course throat cancer.
Seems from my searching the symptoms,
could very well point to that.
But from what I have found out is that throat
cancer, would be very rare in my age group.
(less than 500 cases in my country, Canada ages
45-50 in 10 years)
As I pointed out I cannot visit a Dr.
for sometime. So if throat cancer is that rare,
What else could be causing my symptoms?...trouble
swallowing..slight sore throat..on and off ear pain.
The fact that I was taking a anti-biotic and it has
not got better has me worried.
Please post replies to the group.
Thank You
Any inflammation in the larynx, if severe enough, can give ear pain.
I've got lots of patients in my head and neck cancer practice of your age
with larynx cancer. Some younger. Thos e stats are incorrect
The poster is correct. So says Health Canada.
From the years 1992-2001 there were 482 cases of larynx cancer
in males 45-50 years old in Canada.
You must have an EXTREMELY busy practice to have *lots*
of larynx cancer patients in your practice, that are his age
and younger....Considering it is, as the poster stated,
a rare cancer in his age group.
In a country of 30 million people, 482 cases in 10
years is not only rare it is SUPER DUPER RARE :)
BTW where is it you practice? New York City?
Los Angeles? Must be a major center to have
that many young larynx cancer patients.
|
I see most larynx cancers on Vancouver Island, and have done for the past 12
years. I collect a couple of youngsters each year, treat them, cure most of
them and then follow them. It adds up..
The Stats Canada figures are only as good as the provincial cancer
registries, and some aren't so good........ |

There is no way to get a diagnosis on teh internet.
You need to see an ENT surgeon.
And stop smoking, because if this isn't cancer, the next time it will
be...........
|
I agree he should stop smoking, but I do not agree
with the statement that "if this isn't cancer, the
next time it will be"
"May be" not "Will be"
I take from his nickname Concerned.. he is afraid
enough, with out that kind of statement.
The poster stated he can not get to a Dr.right away.
Hopefully it is not to long...cause after he reads
your reply he is going to have many sleepless nights
ahead.
You make it seem not only likely, but quite likely
that he either has larynx cancer, or will get larynx
cancer, if he continues to smoke.Which you DR.
or I, a layman can not say. PERIOD. |
