Out of curiosity, what is your fasting lipid profile, anyway?

I began Zocor in September and took it for four months.

Then had a cholesterol test and results were:

Total C = 198 (Down from 261 in Sept.)
LDL = 96
HDL + 84
Ratio = 2.4

The report didn't list tryglycerides although my doc
has that info.

I stopped taking Zocor after this doctor visit because
I had had loss of appetite and muscle pains and weakness.
I began it again May 11, took it for about 2 weeks, pains
returned so I stopped again. Haven't had a new profile.
So you see Zocor was quite effective. I was not careful of
what I ate during that period as my appetite was bad and I
ate anything at all that remotely appealed to me.

Rita,
I'm not a doctor but it appears to me that your chol. is great. If you
want to keep it down to within normal limits without statins, I advise you
to become a vegetarian. Also--use only olive oil. Fish and Fish oil
capsules (aka Omega 3) can be included in your diet--esp. salmon. Don't
eat fish more than once per week since it contains mercury. When you visit
a health food store, ask them to sell you a book that contains recipes for
vegetarians.

I wonder what was your profile for the total cholesterol of 261. If the
ratio was less than 3 even then, there would be a case for not giving
you lipid lowering medications based on Framingham data that folks with
ratios less than 3 are very low risk (even if the total is high).

In Christ's love and service,

Rita . Wish I had your numbers this after CABG at 52. So my advice comes
with that disclaimer. Don't eat anything that came from a factory
especially out of an autoclave. Eat colors and Fresh fresh fresh to
infinity.

Still some old quote about eating more ice cream and less beans from the
60's rings in.

Jason...much better to suggest an action than a possible prescription.
Similar to bring a horse to water but we can't make it drink. Cohen's
book resides on my shelf.

I had those numbers after 4 months on Zocor. Have been off it since,
except for two weeks. Then quit again. So I need a retest to see
what they are without Zocor.

I've followed a virtual vegetarian diet from time to time. I would
eat meat only when I got lazy as preparing tasty and satisfying
vegetarian food takes more cooking time and effort that cooking
a burger:) I'm stocking up on an assortment of legumes and grains
and will shop heavily at the fruit and veggie market. Also use
soy products, which I like. Also I shun packaged foods.

Years ago I spent a week at a place in the country run for guests
by Seventh Day Adventists. They are vegans. The meals were just
delicious and varied, but I could tell a lof of work went into
preparing them. They used nut butters as spreads, and soy cheeses
on pizza and Mexican dishes. A few people there complained they
wanted to go for a steak, but not me. Also freshly made whole
grain breads. The Adventists said they had no weight problems
although they ate very heartily. However, one or two did and
when someone inquired why, the answer was "they cheat".

I will eat some fish from time to time, though. A neighbor does
deep sea fishing and brings us some which we package and freeze.

Ice cream -- perhaps on rare occasions. But not a pint of Haagen Daz:)
Beans actually are very delicious when prepared in many ethnic recipes.

I see the battle of the statins absorbing all the

helpful for one who wishes to lower her cholesterol

I'd like to learn about specific eating plans people
have used to lower their cholesterol without statins.
If anyone here hss managed to do so. Detail, details,
how did you go about it? What foods do you absolutely
avoid and which have you added?

Though some people disagree with this also, I think exercise helps -
particularly in raising HDL.

Assuming it can be done, that is, to significantly
lower cholesterol without statins, how have you folks
gone about it? And how successful have you been?
