[The comparative study of clinical therapy of secretory otitis media

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment of secretory otitis media in
nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. METHOD: Fifty eight patients of
NPC with secretory otitis media were divided into two group by random
before radiotherapy. Patients were treated by nasal and nasopharyngeal
debridement and cleansing and tympanic membrane puncturing suction in
group I, while patients were treated by myringotomy or ventilation tube
insertion in Group II. After the patients were followed up for six months,
the two group were compared by efficient rate and complication rate.
RESULTS: Fifty one out of total 58 patients survived after half an years
follow-up. Statistics of surviving patients showed the efficient rate in
group I was 82.1% versus 57.1% in group II. Differentiation was found
between two group (chi 2 = 4.14, P < 0.05). Complication rate was 3.6% in
group I and 28.6% in group II. There was differentiation between two group
(chi 2 = 4.7, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The nasal and nasopharyngeal
debridement and cleaning and eardrum puncturing suction was superior to
myringotomy or ventilation tube insertion.
