Attn: Howard Hughes, call your immunologist while touching dirty phone.

Mom is thus wronggggggg: Don't clean-up every damne thing.

A bath on Saturday night is about right.

Hey, germs & bacteria: get 'em now or later.

June 27, 2006 -- DON'T bother with the dishes or the trash - a dirty
apartment could mean a healthier immune system.
According to a recent study in the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology,
street rats have healthier immune systems than the ones that live in
sterile labs. For people, this could mean that it's time to put down
the Purell and get your hands a little dirty - literally.

The study is based on the hygiene hypothesis - the idea that if you're
not exposed to germs and dirt at an early age, your immune system
overreacts to small environmental irritants like pollen, resulting in
problems like asthma.

And, if a little dirt is all it takes for better health, New York City
could be the perfect place to live - we've got plenty.

According to a recent study in Atmospheric Environment, sitting in the
back seat of a cab exposes passengers to an average of 108,000 dirt
particles per cubic centimeter of air. And, a five-minute taxi ride
exposes people to twice as much dirty air as a five-minute walk.

So is driving around in a cab really good for your health? Dr. Phillip
Tierno, director of clinical microbiology and immunology at NYU Medical
Center, says that's a long shot.

"First of all, comparing lab rodents to street rodents is like
comparing a kid in a bubble to a normal kid - it just doesn't work.
Plus, no human being can eliminate their contact with germs on a daily
basis, no matter how much antibacterial soap they use," Tierno says.
"Living in filth is not really a good thing. Cleanliness is next to
godliness, and that's still the case.

"To a certain degree it's correct to say you need exposure to germs to
elicit immune response. One of the most important things that occurs in
our body is the germs that bathe our body actually begin our immune
response," he says. "But to say that diseases and allergies are related
to being too clean is absurd."

Tierno says that when he gets in a cab he opens the windows to
circulate the air and hopefully get rid of some of the lingering
organisms. He also suggests touching as little as possible and washing
your hands as soon as you get out.
