Gum recession
|
|
|
I am 22 and have been noticing some gum recession. I have cerebral palsy and
often shake whenever I brush my teeth, and I think this is the main cause of
the recession. I was at the dentist a few months ago for something unrelated
and I asked him about it. He looked and didn't seem too worried about it.
Should I be concerned? It looks to be only on my front teeth.
Thanks.

In young people, a certain amount of what we call "passive eruption"
takes place, so the gumline moves somewhat. This is not abnormal. I'm
inclined to think if your dentist isn't concerned you shouldn't be either.

Thanks. I had one dentist concerned about it, but my new dentist pretty much
just noted it and didn't say much more about it so I took that as he wasn't
too worried about it.

I went to the dentist today and they told me I should get a nightguard made
(he said my recession is due to grinding). My parents aren't too thrilled
about shelling out the money for a nightguard, but I am researching it as
well.

I used to, but I don't know if I do now. I know I don't when I'm awake so if
I do, it must be when I'm asleep.

I would be interested in knowing what makes the dentist feel grinding
is responsible for the recession. Back in the dark ages they felt that
"Stillman's clefts" were caused by occlusal trauma such as grinding.
They were a rather characteristic cleft-like defect in the gumline,
usually in the mid-facial surface. I suppose that there are instances
where trauma from bite may contribute to gum recession, but it's down
the list of things I'd consider, and overall Stillman's clefts are a
pretty archaic concept--I haven't heard of them in years.

My step-dad said to buy a mouth guard similar to what a football player
might wear, but personally, I would think something a dentist would make
would be better. My step-dad's just not too thrilled about shelling out a
couple hundred dollars for something like that.

I'd sooner see you get a second opinion. Store-bought nightguards can
do more harm than good.

Well, I just moved and this is my first time visiting this dentist for a
check up. My last dentist also suggested it so I think it'd be a good idea
to check into it.
