recently developed vision problem

Hi Everybody,
I am glad that I found this group. Because it would be really helpfull
if someone who knows about the problem I am currently having
can explain to me more about it and how I can cure it..
I work a lot on the computer and it now seems that whatever I
am seeing is only through my right eye.
I always had difficulty seeing things closeby with my left eye but with
a little effort I could focus on things closeby however my right eye
has always been the more active eye when it comes to reading lines
in a book or on the monitor screen.
I have recently developed a situation in my left eye where now I can
still focus on the lines but they seem to have a floating/warped
appearance and the letters are much smaller in size and the
general lighting coming into the eyes is darker than with my right eye.
So in brief here are the problems with my left eye...
(1) Things are about a couple of millimeters smaller in size
(2) Shape of lines are thinner and not crisp straight but
squiggly ( only very slightly though) and the squiggle runs through
the line when I run my left eye through it.
It almost seems as though there is a dent in the middle of my
sight and if I run through the line, the dent runs through as well.
(3) Things are darker. Bright white seems offwhte and grey seems black.
I have a lot of strain on my left eye at work because of the bad
lighting environment where I work, plus when I return home, I am
on my lcp laptop which doesn't have brightness control and I sit on
it till the wee hours of the morning.
I think all this has damaged my left eye, but I am willing to try any
excersizes or diet to help me out of this..as I am very scared about
this problem.
I am 40 years old now, never needed specs but have always taken care
of my eyes until I started working in my current work place.
Can anyone please advise? Thanks so much

You might have central serous retinopathy. Go & have a proper eye check
with dilated pupils to confirm this. IF it is CSR, you need to reduce
your workload and wait about 3 months and it should improve a fair bit.
There are other conditions that it could be too so make sure you have it
checked properly.

Could be anything from simply needing glasses to a potentially blinding
retinal condition. You need to see an eye professional ASAP for an eye
examination.
BTW, working in dim light, on a computer or on a laptop, staying up
late will not cause vision problems.

Thanks for your replies. I have made an appointment to see
a doctor.
The place where I currently work has the following lighting
situation. I have a monitor in front of me but on both the left and
right sides are open windows without blinds. I cannot change
this situation but I have adjusted to this now by putting boxes on
either side so as to shield out the light from the windows.
This helped ofcourse but then I began to get problems with the light
diagnolly over my left eye.
I now wear a hat to prevent getting glare from overhead.
However am I too late in doing all of this? |

As stated earlier, bad lighting will not cause eye disorders. Lighting
such as you describe can be a source of glare and discomfort but will
not cause eye disease or refractive error.
Does your workplace have a health and safety committee? If so, have
them investigate. At minimum you should have adjustable blinds on
those windows. Your employer should be informed that good ergonomics
will improve employee productivity; any money put into improving
lighting, desk set ups and so on will rapidly come back to him via
better work outputs.
Many computer suppliers can also supply an ergonomic consultant; urge
your employer to consider this.

Hi Again,
As planned I saw an eye specialist yesterday and was diagnosed
as having "central serous retinopathy."
The specialist didn't spend much time looking into my
eyes though. So I might go to see a private doctor for
another opinion therefore.
He mentioned that i have a "blister" on
my retina and that it should heal on its own.
And the quality of my vision returning to normal
would depend on how well the blister heals. So the
wavy lines and things appearing smaller would sort
themselves out in 2 months. But he also said that my eye would
not be able to perceive full visual contrast for a "while" or
permanently.
I am a bit worried about this and have to ask:
1) Are there any people out there who HAD Central Serous
Retinopaty whose condition has gone away after waiting
for some time ?
2) If so, has full brightness level returned in your vision and
are things looking the right size without distortion ?
Waiting to hear from you. Please let me know.
Thanks again. |

First of all, let's give credit to Dom for a correct diagnosis. Sound
the gong!
Some people have central serous retinopathy one time only and it heals
without sequelae. Others have it repeatedly, with minor, but permanent
symptoms.
Because the fluid pushes the retina slightly forward, the eye becomes
more farsighted, resulting in greater difficulty with near focus. This
goes away after the fluid is re-absorbed.

Yes ofcourse, Thanks Dom.
And thanks to all who are replying as well.
I hope that this is just a temporary thing.
Is there anything I need to do to get the fluid
re-absorbed so that it straightens out the retina?
And ofcourse what should I do/maintain so as to
prevent it from recurring ?
Thanks again |
