Invisalign as a retainer - long term

Hello,
No one maybe able to answer this question since Invisalign is
relatively new. I was wondering about the long term viability of
Invisalign as a retainer. More specifically has anyone kept and used
their last mounthpiece and used it as a retainer for a long period?
Does the retainer hold up over time?
And does anyone know if you are able to purchase your last retainer in
the future if something happens to your current one? If so how much is
it?
I know Invisalign works...but I am thinking long term. 5 to 10 to 20
years down the line. |

you can have your dentist order or make you a retainer.
using the last aligner as a retainer is a bad idea you will quickly
wear through it.
Invisalign's retainers are made of a thicker material but
unfortunatlely they do not last very long, maximum 6 months.
You are better off with a traditional Hawley type retainer or a
permanent bonded wire retainer.
Invisalign can make you retainers as long as your teeth have not
drifted far from treatment after that point it will not fit. Your
dentist can also make you an exact type of retainer as invisalign with
slightly different material which will last 1 year by taking an
impression of your teeth.
I however recommend the Hawley or perm bonded depending on how severe
the case was and your compliance.
You see once you start ortho treatment as an adult past the growth of
the callogen fibers, and your skeletal development your treatment lasts
the rest of your life. Retention is this last phase of treatment.
Also make sure you do the fiberotomy it helps.

Agreeed, plus long term use of occlusal coverage retainers can cause
open bites, which the teeth do not meet together.

How serious is this risk? Since I completed Invisalign four years ago
I've worn (as I've discussed here before) two retainers of a softer
plastic made in the orthodontist's office from a mold of my teeth as
of the conclusion of the treatment. After wearing them 24/7 for a year
as advised, I've since worn them while sleeping at night.

The invisalign type plastic used for retainers are maximum .75-1mm
thick and they wear with use, so for this type of retainer open bite is
not a problem.
I believe what DR Braces was referring to is retainers or occlusal
orthosis with acrylic coverage these are different.

Does anybody know how long you have to wear the retainers from
invisalign after the treatment?
And how much does it cost? How long does it take?
