Timolol Eye Drops and lowered heart rate?
|
|
|
I'm supposed to take Timolol eyedrops twice a day to keep eye pressure
at bay. Sometimes in the past I have neglected for weeks at a time to
take the eye drops. Recently I resumed taking the drops of Timolol and
I'm finding that I am experiencing a slower heart rate and having
palpitations from time to time (or skipped beats). I feel a senstion
on the left side of my throat, a pulsing feeling, that is disturbing.
So I did a little research and find that Timolol is a Beta Blocker and
I guess on me it causes this side affect, i.e. slowing of the heart
beat, etc. It has happened to me before when I've used Timolol.
I'll ask my eye doctor about it tomorrow, but I'm wondering if I
should discontinue use of the Timolol or is this a harmless side
affect that I just have to put up with? I'm a 66 year old male type II
diabetic with pretty good control (132 in the morning). |

Is this because it irritates your eyes?
If so, it could be the preservative, benzalkonium.

The former can happen because timolol (Timoptic) is a beta blocker.
The latter is unexpected because if anything, the usual skipped beats
should be less frequent in the presence of a beta blocker.

This is a concern because of the above comment concerning palpitations
occurring with the use of a beta blocker.

Yes, the slowing is anticipated, however the palpitations are not.

Would suggest you call your doctor to request a referral to consult
with a cardiologist.

I am crossposting this to ASD, where others likely will offer their
opinion about whether 132 is good control and help you in this area.
Hope this above information helps you.
