3 and a half weeks after oral surgery
|
|
|
Hello,
I had my bottom wisdom teeth and a molar removed over 3 weeks ago. Am I
still at risk of getting dry sockett? I was rinsing the holes and
something huge came out and I am freaking out that I washed out
important tissue. Is this likely?? My jaw still aches at this time, is
this normal?
Anyone who can tell me what any info because I am really freaked out
would be nice.

You are pretty much out of the woods for DEVELOPING a dry socket.
However, you may have had a dry socket and these take time to heal.
Whatever washed out at this point is likely either debris or a small
piece of dead bone (sequestration). This happens sometimes and is
usually nothing to worry about.
However, 3 weeks is a long time to still have pain. Just to be sure, I
recommend you have your dentist/oral surgeon take a look at it.

Thank you for your reply,
I did have the oral surgeon take a look at it maybe 2 weeks ago (so I
am re-evaluating and I think I might be at 4 weeks post op). He seemed
to think the pain was due to debris because I wasn't washing my sockets
out very well at that time. He said it looked fine. The ache is sort of
deep in my jaw like a tooth ache and related to opening and closing my
mouth, so maybe it has to do with the joint. (I always had some
problems with this sort of thing).
Do you still think I should go back again to the oral surgeon? (they
seemed annyoed previously!)

Surgeons actually have to act annoyed--it's in the rule book!
I'd say that if you think the pain is diminishing (even slowly) you're
probably OK. But if you have any further swelling, drainage, or
increased pain, call them anyway. If they act annoyed, too bad! If you
were referred to the surgeon by the general dentist, he/she will be
interested in reports of poor behavior by specialists offices. I know I
would be!

When I had my lower molar out, they said it was likely to happen one
or two days after the surgery.
Just what I remember the dentist saying.
