One Family Is All Too Familiar With Lyme Disease
By DANYA BACCHUS (SALISBURY, MD -- WMDT) 6/5/2006
"Not only did she have Lyme Disease, but she also had Babesiois,
Ehrlichiosis...so she actually had five diseases from the tick."
Teresa Davis is talking about her 18-year-old daughter, Samantha. Five
years ago, she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, and just last year, her
family found out Samantha wasn't the only one. Teresa, her husband and
son have also been diagnosed with Lyme Disease and Babesiosis.
"It was strange, I've been bitten by ticks all my life and have never
really known that and still don't know to this day how long I've had
Lyme Disease," she said.
If you think you're not at risk of getting bitten by a tick, guess
again. I was outside for five minutes and I've already got a tick
crawling on my leg.
"You know, they're everywhere, and they're so tiny that you'll think
their a mole or a freckle even."
Now as a board member of the Lyme Disease Association of the Eastern
Shore, Teresa is dedicated to informing others about the illness.
Teresa's daughter Samantha is doing fine now.
Health officials say if you plan going outdoors or spending time in the
woods, there are things you can do to prevent Lyme Disease. Wear light
colored, long sleeved shirts and pants. Tuck your shirt in your pants
and pants into your socks. Use tick repellants and always check for
ticks after being outdoors. |
