I know that there are potential problems with taking high dose
steroids and eye problems but how soon after starting taking them can
problems arise?

the answer depends on the potential problem(s) with corticosteroids you
are talking about.
corticosteroids can cause increased blood sugar levels even in
non-diabetics that mimic full-blown diabetes. these can cause
refractive changes that affect the clarity of vision by changing your
prescription. these changes can happen quickly (within hours to days
of taking the steroids).
steriods can also cause increased intraocular pressures mimicing
glaucoma. this happens in some people but not in most people. if it
happens it usually takes a few days to develop and can last for days to
weeks sometimes even after the steroids are withdrawn. if you happen
to be one of these "steroid responders" you may need to take glaucoma
drops temporarily until the pressure goes back to normal.
steroids can also induce cataracts in some people. this effect usually
takes weeks to months to develop.
