HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A Windham man suspected of abusing his wife and
children kidnapped his three kids from state social workers Tuesday but
was captured several hours later, police said.
State police on Tuesday issued an Amber Alert for Jeffrey Yeaw. His
wife is seeking a divorce and has accused him of abuse, according to
court records.

State social workers took custody of the children - ages 3, 4 and 5 -
this fall, said Charles G. Karanian, an attorney for Yeaw's estranged
wife, Rebekah. Yeaw refused to allow them to go to school or see
doctors, said Charles G. Karanian, an attorney for Yeaw's estranged
wife, Rebekah.

"He's against any authority telling him what he should do or how he
should raise the children,'' Karanian said. "Doctors, courts, he's
against all that stuff.''

Yeaw was on a supervised visit with the children Tuesday in Willimantic
when he sped off with the children, Ezekiel, Jesseniah and Rhienna,
police said

"The father drove up and snatched the three of them and threw them in
the cab of his truck,'' said Col. Edward Lynch, the head of the state
police.

Hours later, police said they found Yeaw and the children in
Middlebury. State police canceled the Amber Alert.

Yeaw was apprehended at about 10:25 p.m. at the home of acquaintances,
Middlebury Police Chief Patrick Bona told the Republican-American of
Waterbury. The children were in good condition and were taken to a
hospital for a routine check, he said.

The couple who live at the home were not aware of the Amber Alert, but
the husband dialed 911 after speaking with Yeaw, police said. It was
not clear what Yeaw said that alarmed the man.

State police took Yeaw to the Colchester barracks and charged him with
three counts of risk of injury to a minor and three counts of custodial
interference. He was held on a $100,000 bond and was to be arraigned
Wednesday in Danielson Superior Court.

The abduction came a day after testy court appearance for Yeaw. A judge
on Monday admonished Yeaw for not filing financial affidavits and other
paperwork on time, Karanian said.

"He told a judge, 'There's no sense in me doing anything. I'm going to
lose my parental rights anyway,'" Karanian said.

The abduction triggered Connecticut's second-ever Amber Alert, and
Willimantic police credited the advisory with leading investigators to
the children.

Rebekah Yeaw is being treated for depression and other mental
illnesses, her attorney said, and was unable to take custody of her
children when the Department of Children and Families intervened.

Jeffrey Yeaw has other children from a previous marriage, which also
ended in divorce, said Karanian, who also represented Yeaw's first
wife. His first wife is living in Massachusetts and does not receive
child support, Karanian said.

"He's self-employed, a design architect. He used to use the word
architect but he had no college," Karanian said. "He wasn't making any
money."
