NJ: 2005 Set Lyme Disease Record
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - May 4, 2006 - There was a record number of Lyme
disease
cases reported in New Jersey last year.
Confirmed cases rose 23 percent to nearly 3,400, ranking the state
third in
the nation.
The tick-borne illness causes joint pain and flu-like symptoms in
patients.
It is treated with antibiotics.
Morris County had the most number of cases, 529.
But even Essex, Hudson and Camden counties are seeing more residents
infected with Lyme.
State officials say the increase probably reflects better reporting and
recognition of the disease by doctors. However, development in the
Garden
State has increasingly moved into wooded areas.
The lowest number of reported Lyme disease cases was nearly 2,400 in
2001.
