I too attended a Catholic School of Nursing. I got an excellent
education, (not training), but really, what can one expect when
the avenue you chose is a Catholic School of Nursing. That's the
way "they" do it, and you know that. You've probably known it all
your life, if you attended a parochial school. What about your
Catechism class as taught by Sister Mary Mean?
My school expelled a student who had two weeks to go in her nursing
education because she got married by a Justice of the Peace instead
of a Priest. Fair? Hell no. She wasted three long years of her
life. Just another example of "oppression" . . .
Go on, ignore the bullying and unfairness, but don't absorb it all.
Let it end with yourself. I certainly hope your school is an
accredited one, and awards an academic degree, not a diploma. Those
days are over -- as in done and gone, though there are a few diploma
schools left.
Yes, my comments were/are an attack on Catholicism by a life long Catholic.
I'll start on the Pope next. He should retire, and you know that, too.

In general one usually finds floor/staff nurses starting out around
the
same in terms of salary with pay rises coming with sonority, and
perhaps education (more for BSNs). Pay usually goes up for those
working
in the specialty care units like cardiac, critical, neonatal etc.
Again
this can also vary by hospital and supply of qualified nurses
available.
Huh? In all my years in critical care, I never got an extra dime for
working in a specialty, or for having my CCRN. I was hired in based
on
years of nursing experience. Then the minuscule so-called merit
raises
almost always guaranteed that new people were brought in at a higher
rate
than current employees. So much for seniority.
In my current job, I was hired in based on never having been in that
department before; i.e., at the bottom of the pay scale, despite 20
years as
an RN.

Notice I did qualify my posting with "...... may vary by hospital", but
take your point.
Happy Easter!

That's the standard in my area as well. If you want a significant raise, you
need to quit your job and go to another hospital. If you want another
significant raise, wait a year or two and go back to wherever you came from
originally. You'll be way ahead of people who were hired at the same time as
you but stayed there the whole time.
Typical "merit" raises are in the 3% range; going to another hospital will bring
you 10-15%.
Around here, if you're looking for a bedside position, nobody gives a dman what
you educational preparation is. ADNs get paid the same as BSNs. You're paid
for being a RN. It's the license, not the diploma, that gives you worth in
administration's eyes.

Yep, I worked ICU for 16 years, in 3 different locations. Never once
got a differential, even after I went back and got my BSN.

I can get you caught up on what has happened this past year. Ericka
may be back in school abroad, though I am not sure if she will be
permitted to continue to purseu medicine. I think you remember
Ericka's passion to be a Pediatric Cariothoracic Surgeon? She is so
very intelligent and gifted to excell in this beyond all her
peers-to-be (remember her small-boned hands - size 4 ring finger?
Perfect for surgery!) but her current situation and security issues
have convinced her father, Nick, to not pursue this vocation. However,
Ericka's faith and determination may change her Daddy's heart in time
... just how can any father who claims to love his daughter (ONLY
child to Ericka's mother) so crush his daughter's heart's desire?
Forever? I don't think so, yet my heart cries out to know she is safe.
Trying to trust in our Heavenly Father, but such a love for such a
priceless soul as Ericka is difficult to completely abandon to God's
complete deliverence and glory. I *am* trying! (Remember the tears in
Macon? They continue but with greater faith and a greater appreciation
for God and Ericka!)
Sincerely in Christ Jesus,

I'll second the nomination for "Understanding Nutrition." The newer, 10th
edition of this book is the one we used in the course in human nutrition
that I took last quarter. I think the read better supported cognitive
retention of key material than did other sources, such as those provided in
nursing courses that overlapped in subject material, and it certainly met
the objective of providing for an understanding of nutrition.

Thank you both for the info. I may see if our local library can
get it in, depending on how much it costs. I am suprised
that there aren't any good sources online though, if there
aren't any. Why wouldn't there be? |

All the info you want is online - but not necessarily at the same place.
If you search for a phrase, you'll get countless pages - add "nursing" on
the end of the line, and that will narrow it down. If you don't get what you
want straight away, just change the search terms a little and try again ...
it gets easier with practice, and you'll soon find some sites that are well
worth bookmarking.

Is it possible for him to take an exam and come work in the US once

You (or he) may want to contact the American Academy of Physician
Assistants (www.aapa.org) to find out what his options are. This page
has specific contact information that may be useful:

You are required to graduate from an accredited PA program and pass a
national certification exam prior to practicing as a PA in the united
states. As stated prior, additional information is available at the
aapa.org website. There were 4 foreign trained MDs in my PA class. Good
luck! kc, mhs, pa-c, atc |

Just a reminder that you should not use an online resource for lab values ie |
the actual reference range. You need to use the lab values pertaining to
where the lab tests were done.
Interpretation of lab tests as to what the tests mean can also depend on the
method used.
Not all methods are uniform and not all values within even the same method
are uniform. Not everybody does things the same way. |
