I found the answer in _The Nutrition Almanac_, 5th Ed., not s.v.
"magnesium," but "kidney stones," p. 107. It's "yes":

"Magnesium--200 to 400 mg, in citrate form with meals, lowers risk of
stone formation."

[footnote:] Lindberg, J., et al. "Effect of magnesium citrate and
magnesium oxide on the crystallization of calcium salts in urine:
Changes produced by food-magnesium interaction," _J. Urol._ *143:*
248-51 (1990).

Sorry about responding to my own post, but I thought it was worthwhile.

Magnesium oxide is the preferred form for constipation. (note it is
less well absorbed, and remains in the bowel retaining moisture)
Magnesium citrate is better absorbed for othe r metabolic purposes,
and is more expensive.

I would recommend tablets instead! They are also available, but you may have
to look around. Solgar makes them, and I think the Vitamin Shoppe sells some
also.
