Feeling pulse in leg; reason for concern?
|
|
|
Is there any reason to be concerned if I feel my pulse in my leg? I
sometimes feel it in other areas as well, but certain areas of my leg
are frequent. Often the feeling is much greater if I am sitting (and
I'll feel the pulsating feeling on the bottom side of my thigh, near or
where it is resting on a chair).
Thanks,
Dave |

It is unusual and may indicate an aneurysm. Would suggest you inform
your doctor.
You are welcome, Dave.

I'll have to talk to him about it tomorrow. It happens quite often and
I've always ignored it because I've talked to others who say they
experience the same thing. What tests can he perform in this case if
it is an aneurysm? I knew someone who was sent home from a hospital
who died from an aneurysm that night and have always wondered what
could have been done to discover her actual condition.

He will start first with simply examining you.

That would most likely have been an abdominal aortic aneurysm which is
also detectable by physical exam in many instances. Sizing up the
aneurysm would require either a CT scan, and MRI/MRA or ultrasonography.

It seems to me I heard somewhere that davidd31415 wrote in article

Is this something new for you? Have you changed your level of activity
recently? Do you have other sensations or physical symptoms along with
feeling your pulse?
I suspect that among trained athletes, and probably for normally fit
non-athletes as well, this is not an uncommon occurrence.
Don't use my experience for a guide, but if I concentrate I can sense my
pulse in many parts of my body; I sometimes use that pulsation to count
off my heart rate as I run. AFAIK I am in good health, and last saw my
cardiologist about two weeks ago. (For instance, sitting at the
computer right now I'm able to feel my pulse in my earlobes, in my
hands, and in my chest and abdomen. I've always thought everybody could
do that. <G>)

I mentioned it to my doctor and his first response was "that's normal."
I tried to emphasize that although it was at the rate of my pulse it
was practically throbbing, under my leg, as I was sitting in a chair
and it kept doing it for the remainder of the evening. This isn't
something that is always present, it comes and goes. He told me it was
nothing to be worried about, felt my legs, checked my pulse in my ankle
and said not to worry about it.
I've been able to catch my pulse in my ears and sometimes other parts
of my body, it was just the intesnity and duration of this instance
that alarmed me. It bothers me when one MD says something is unusual
and another says it is unusual, but unless I start to feel pain I am
going to forget about it.
Thanks for the responses,
Dave

As long as he did indeed examine you, take the findings as reassuring.
